Montecatini terme has an important watering place that makes tourism the main economic activity of the area. The thermal waters are Montecatini's resource and around them many Spas have been built.
Next to known mineral water therapy (that is drinking water) the Terme of Montecatini during the years have supported a wide range of spa treatments, from massages with mud, steam rooms and beauty treatments.
A little village near Montecatini Terme is Montecatini Alto which is connected with the city below with a cable railway which uses original wagons dated 1898, still functioning (it is the oldest cable railway in the world).
