The Gulf of Baratti takes its name from the village of Baratti, situated at the southern end, at which there are graves of Etruscan age.
The creek is characterized by a sandy beach, largest in the north-central part of the Gulf, which tends to decrease considerably towards the southern end of the harbour of Baratti.
In some areas the Gulf has a pine forest with pinasters, which is interrupted at the northern end of the creek and at the central part where the necropolis is.
